JCL PROUDLY PRESENTS OUR TALENTED TEACHER: JAN KOTOUČ

I have always enjoyed telling stories. As a kid, I watched movies and then replayed them for myself and made them better. Even though I’m not an only child, I enjoyed playing by myself. That way, I could be every character in the story.

I started writing stories when I was 14. I’ve always liked sci-fi and similar genres as a reader, so that was also what I wanted to write. My first book was published in 2009. To date, I’ve published 10 books and have another three finished and waiting for publication. My “Czech lands” series, set in an alternate version of the 1940s where Czechs and Slovaks have a big seafaring empire, has become a bestseller. Writing is now a significant part of my income and also my passion. It’s great to do something you love and get paid for it.

Recently, I finished a crowdfunding campaign to finance the translation of my novels into English, starting with my latest sci-fi, Frontiers of the Imperium. I’ve been asked a lot why I don’t translate it myself. I thought about it for a long time, but I'd rather spend my time writing new books – that’s what I’m good at. So I decided to hire a professional translator who is a native speaker. The translation is almost done, and I hope that all my JCL colleagues will be able to read it soon.
